Over 200,000 people lost their homes in South Sudan


The conflict that raged in South Sudan has made more than 200,000 people from their homes , said a spokesman for the UN at the UN Headquarters , New York , Wednesday ( 8/1 ) .

" Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs ( OCHA ) said as many as 201,000 people have been displaced within their country due to the current crisis in South Sudan since December 15 , " said Farhan Haq , Acting Deputy Spokesperson for the United Nations , told reporters at a daily news briefing .

" As many as 85,000 people are estimated homeless in Mingkaman and surrounding areas in the District Awerial , Lakes State , " said Haq added .

According to OCHA , food , health care , shelter , water , sanitation and health remains a priority for humanitarian response , while humanitarian access continues to be hampered due to fierce hostility , attacks on aid workers and assets , to intervene in humanitarian activities and other obstructions .

Humanitarian flights into the region of Bor , Jonglei State capital , has been severely disrupted by the fighting in the area , said Haq .

" Aid agencies continue to deal with all the enemies in order to gain safe access to civilians in need of assistance , " he added , as quoted by Xinhua . /

Various aid agencies also launched an additional plan to handle the extra people who lost their homes in the coming weeks and since the rainy season started in June, said Haq .

The conflict erupted in South Sudan on December 15 , when the government Salva Kiir said troops loyal to former vice president Riek Machar - who was fired in July - launched a coup attempt .

The Security Council passed a resolution last week one to send additional 5,500 soldiers and 440 police to raise the level of the entire police force in the United Nations Mission in South Sudan ( UNMISS ) , in an effort to protect civilians .

In the summit of the Inter- Government Institutions on Development ( IGAD ) , held on Friday ( 3/1 ) in the Kenyan capital , Nairobi , the East African bloc issued a communiqué condemning the escalating unrest in the conflict and demanded an immediate ceasefire in South Sudan .

South Sudan government said it had agreed earlier truce , but Machar refused, and demanded a mechanism to monitor the ceasefire .

Haq on Tuesday ( 7/1 ) said UNMISS continue to protect as many as 62,000 civilians in its base , while humanitarian actors providing assistance and support .
