Thousands of South Sudanese have crossed into Uganda


23,546 South Sudanese refugees who fled fighting in the country they have to cross into Uganda on December 16 , said the UNHCR told reporters in Kampala on Tuesday .

The report updated the UNHCR says refugees continue to flow into the country in East Africa .

Among the 23 546 refugees there are 16 264 people in the center who received a stopover in Adjumani district and 5,552 people received shelter in the center of Ocea . Also there are 1,730 people who have arrived directly to Kiryandongo refugee settlement .

" The situation on the border Elegu / Nimule and transit center Dzaipi remains worrisome given the very large number of people who came , " the report said .

UNHCR said that although the emergency response is underway and most of the help available , there is still a critical shortage of shelter, water and sanitation facilities , and medical supplies for the shelter occupied by people .

" Given the magnitude of the flow of refugees , all basic needs require an immediate response , " the report said .

Fighting erupted last December between troops loyal to former vice-president Riek Machar and South Sudan's President Salva Kiir .
