U.S. Secretary of State urges Syrian opposition to join in peace talks
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry Thursday urged the divided Syrian opposition to join peace talks next week , and swear they could voice any name for the temporary leadership .
" On the eve of the general assembly meeting of Syrian opposition coalition tomorrow to decide whether to participate in a peace conference in Geneva , the United States urged a vote ... a positive , " Kerry said in a surprise statement to reporters , AFP reported .
" The Syrian people should be able to determine the future of their own country , their voices must be heard , " he said , ahead of a peace conference in Switzerland that 's opened on January 22 .
" Geneva peace conference is not the end , but the beginning . Launch a process which is the best opportunity for the opposition to achieve the objectives of the people and the Syrian revolution . "
The purpose of the UN -led talks is to find a way to induct a transitional government to help end the war , in which 130,000 people have been killed since March 2011 .
Kerry said the Syrian opposition has the power to veto the agency name for the transition , as well as the regime of President Bashar al - Assad .
"Any names submitted to the Syrian leadership transition ... the names were to be agreed upon by both the opposition and the regime . It should be a mutual agreement .
" This means that any figure that is considered unacceptable by both parties , whether President Bashar or members of the opposition , can not be part of the future , " added Kerry .
