U.S. use the word " Myanmar "
United States sometimes use the word " Myanmar " instead of Burma to the Asian country for the sake of " diplomatic politeness " alone , the U.S. State Department said , as quoted by AFP .
Burma's military junta changed the name into " Myanmar " in 1989 because Burma is the name peninggalkan British colonialism and the just concluded one ethnic and one area in the country .
But opposition groups and figures in exile against the name change and the U.S. come to use the word " Burma " as a sign of solidarity .
But on Friday Foreign Minister John Kerry twice mentions " Myanmar " in his speech at the celebration of the country's independence day , without once mentioning the word " Burma " .
State Department spokesman Marie Harf told reporters that the U.S. would continue the policy of the government to the name " Burma " .
" However, in certain circumstances , U.S. government officials would call the country with ' Burma ' for the sake of diplomatic politeness , " he said , pointing to the words of President Barack Obama, who visited the country in 2012 which mentions both the name ' Burma ' or ' Myanmar ' .
" I do not think there is confusion , " he said .
As part of the reconciliation to Myanmar , the U.S. has increased its development aid and end economic sanctions on the country 's rich resources and strategic position that , according to AFP .
