UN : Climate Worst Case Scenario Could Be Avoided

UN : Climate Worst Case Scenario Could Be Avoided

Report of the United Nations ( UN ) shows the world countries can still avoid the serious consequences of climate change . So long as they act quickly and aggressively to cut the rate of acceleration of greenhouse gas emissions .

Based on the report , greenhouse gas emissions rose rapidly between 2000 and 2010 . Strengthening faster rate than in the previous three decades . The global economic crisis in 2007 and 2008 temporarily reduce emissions . However , the conditions do not change the overall trend , report said .

The latest report of the UN is a major concern policy makers around the world . Therefore , the report focuses on the various scenarios in order to cut global warming . Presented in Berlin on Sunday , the third episode in the report is a comprehensive record of four sections composed of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ( IPCC ) ..

Delay action would only deepen the risks and costs to be paid at a later date . Ottmar Edenhofer , deputy chairman of the IPCC Working Group III , warned that climate change mitigation will not be achieved , if the company and the government " to advance their interests independently. "

According Edenhofer , the action does not mean " people of the world must sacrifice growth [ economy ] . Climate policy ... is not a free lunch , but lunch is worth buying . "

With this report , " policy makers are given various options . They can decide whatever they want , " said Ed Hawkins , a climate scientist at the University of Reading , UK . He is co-author of the previous IPCC reports .

A key message in the latest IPCC report is alarming scenario can still be avoided . " Only with a massive change in terms of technology and institutions , we can achieve a better chance of preventing global warming beyond the threshold , " the tentative conclusions of the UN panel .

In 2010 , some 200 countries agreed to reduce emissions to prevent a rise in world temperature reaches a certain threshold . The increase in the limit is two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels .

To get to that point , says the IPCC , by mid-century greenhouse gas emissions must be cut by 40 % to 70 % compared to the level in 2010 . Emissions must be cut almost to zero at the end of the century .

However , large - scale changes , especially involving the government and the power industry and transportation - will require substantial expenditures . The fact it has become a subject of great controversy and conflict in many places .

In a press conference in Berlin , IPCC chairman Rajendra Pachauri stated the analysis of costs and benefits of mitigation is " a complex question . " However , he invites all to no longer take into account the value of the dollar , if it relates to the loss of human lives and destruction of terrestrial and marine ecosystems are triggered changes climate .

" We have to rethink about what might happen , if we do not take the necessary action , " he said .WSJ
