Convicted terrorist Abu Bakar Bashir said it supported the establishment of an Islamic state movement by the group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
Statement of support for Bashir, who is touted as the spiritual leader of the extremist network, delivered in Nusa Kambangan prison, Cilacap, Central Java.
Bashir also asked his followers to support ISIS, said chairman of the Jamaah Anshorut Tauhid (JAT), Mochamman Achwan.
JAT is an organization founded by Bashir after coming out of the Jemaah Islamiah, which is stated to be behind the 2002 Bali bombing and terrorism cases.
"Bashir told us to support the struggle of ISIS for three reasons. There are leaders, could carry out the law, and declared., But Mr Bashir has not berbaiat (oath of allegiance)," said Achwan to Sri Lestari from Indonesia BBC.
"Mr. Bashir is merely supportive," he said.
He declined to elaborate in detail in support of the ISIS but said some members of JAT have gone to Syria and joined the ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra (JN).
JN is a jihadist organization in Syria, which has links with al-Qaeda.
Taufik Andrie terrorism analysts said the support given by Bashir could have an effect to his followers, but in general the role of leadership in jihad groups are not too many roles.
"The dynamics of the global jihad that require decisions that are immediately and allow the individual to take on a role here. Decision without amir (leader) also they can take decisions individually as there is space, namely in Syria and Iraq," said Taufik.
In addition to Abu Bakar Bashir, convicted of terrorism support ISIS is Safe Abdurrahman, who was sentenced to nine years in prison for terrorism training case in Aceh.
