Russia will not tolerate "extortion" of the United States

Russian Foreign Ministry said that Russia will not tolerate "extortion" of the United States and has the right to retaliate.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the latest U.S. sanctions against Russia will become an obstacle for the bilateral relations and harm American business as well as Russia.

Thus Putin said on television during a visit to Brazil, just a few hours after U.S. President Barack Obama announced new sanctions against Russian banks and energy companies because of Moscow's support on the pro-Russian separatist rebellion in Ukraine.

Separately, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that Russia will not tolerate "extortion" of the United States and has the right to retaliate. The ministry accused the EU of succumbing to pressure from the United States to impose sanctions as well.

Obama, who spoke Wednesday at the White House, said he has repeatedly urged Moscow to take the steps necessary to mitigate the crisis, and that Russia has so far failed to comply with the U.S. recommendations.

A Treasury Department statement said the latest sanctions prohibit new financial aid from the U.S. for two major Russian state-owned institutions - natural gas producer Novatek and Rosneft oil company. The sanctions also restrict their access to capital markets.

Four senior Russian officials, including the deputy chairman of the Russian parliament, were also targeted sanctions.

In addition, the sanctions on Russian arms eight companies that produce a variety of weapons, including small arms, mortars and tanks. The sanctions also target important shipbuilding facilities on the Crimean peninsula. VOA
