Urges Iraqi Kurdistan Referendum for Independence. Fears of Islamist Militancy Rises

President of the autonomous Kurdish region of Iraq asked parliament to prepare for independence referendum.

Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region President Massoud Barzani told the local legislature in a speech on Thursday (3/7) that "it is time to decide the fate of their own and not wait for others to decide our fate."

Barzani called on lawmakers to form a committee that would organize a referendum and determine the voting date.

It happened a few days after the new Iraqi parliament ended the first session since the April elections, without choosing a new prime minister.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has been invaded by an increasingly vociferous demands that he resign and let the Iraqi parliament choose a new prime minister. So far, there has been no sign of it going backwards.

The Obama administration says Iraq must remain united if it is to resolve a dispute that has killed thousands of people and threatening the government dropped.

As the number of publications on the violence of militant groups, concerns about Islamic extremism high in countries with substantial Muslim populations.

Support for violent tactics such as suicide bombings have declined in many countries in the last 10 years, although some countries still have a significant minority who approve, according to a survey by the Pew Research Center based in Washington.

Pew, which routinely track opinio regarding religious issues around the world, conducted a poll of 14,000 Muslims in 14 countries in April and May, before the radical group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) took over a large area in Iraq and Syria and announced a new Islamic caliphate there.

Although not asked about ISIS, the discovery of the survey showed there was little support for the insistence on Tuesday by ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi to the Muslims around the world to carry a weapon to avenge what he called ugliness against Islam.

"As the number of publications on violence, from civil war to suicide bombing, which is endemic in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia, the level of concern about Islamic extremism high among countries with substantial Muslim populations," according to the survey.
