Muslim groups are uncomfortable with the popularity kandidate prime minister of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party , Narendra Modi .

Grand Mosque imam of New Delhi , Syed Ahmed Bukhari , urging Muslims to vote for the Congress Party , which is currently the ruling party in India .

Voting began this week in the first phase which will continue in the next five weeks .

Muslims cover about 13 percent of the population in some regions of India and Muslim voices can play a key role in deciding the winner , according to analysts .

There are 35 constituencies where Muslims cover about 30 percent of the electorate . Then there's 150 other constituencies where the Muslim population of nearly 10 per cent of the total voters , which means the 543 -seat House of Representatives , there are about 200 seats where Muslim voices can impact on the election results .

But analysts said that while there is the ability to influence the outcome of the election , Muslims in India should not be seen as a whole because they do not agree with one voice about which party is selected .

The voters , both Hindu and Muslim , seen a candidate that they think will serve them well , instead of choosing based on ethnicity or religion .

The surveys also show that Muslims can not be driven by anyone to choose one considers partai.Mereka poverty , unemployment and education as their major issue .

But experts say the election is difficult to find patterns among the Indian Muslims . In the previous elections in Gujarat , four of the 10 Muslim Chief Minister Narendra Modi chose .

By many in India , Modi is considered controversial because of what happened to one of the worst sectarian violence in the nation's history in 2002 , when hundreds of Muslims were killed in Gujarat state . Modi is the chief minister at the time and the critics said he was not much or not doing anything to stop the violence .

The fact that Modi receives significant Muslim voice in Gujarat shows that Muslims will choose whoever they think will serve them well despite his past shows violence .

However, analysts say Modi is difficult for the party , the BJP , which emerged as the biggest challenger to the ruling Congress Party , to attract Muslim voters across the country .VOA
