Russian military command form the North Pole
Russia will establish a new strategic military command end of 2014 to protect its interests in the Arctic, says a high-ranking military source told RIA Novosti on Monday.
"The new command will consist of the Northern Fleet, Arctic warfare brigades, air force and air defense units as well as additional administrative structure," said a source in the General Staff of the Russian military as quoted by RIA Novosti.
Strategic Command military structure Unite's Northern Fleet will be responsible for shipping and protecting the Russian Arctic fisheries, oil and gas fields in the Arctic, and national boundaries in the north country, the source said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the military last December to increase its presence in the Arctic and complete construction of military infrastructure in the region in 2014.
