MLS itself is no stranger to Beckham because he could defend the LA Galaxy in 2007 and 2012. In his contract with LA Galaxy, Beckham is rumored to have an option to purchase shares of the club.
After deciding to retire, Beckham is reportedly in talks with advisers to buy a stake in the club in the U.S.. However, Beckham plans to buy shares for a new club is not a club that competed in the MLS.
"There were discussions with advisors and management team (Beckham). However, this new initial discussions," said MLS spokesman, Dan Courtemanche, as reported by Skysports.
MLS currently has 19 teams. The plan number will be increased to 20 teams, after a businessman from Abu Dhabi who is also the owner of Manchester City, Sheikh Mansour, reportedly interested in buying shares of one of the new clubs.
Beckham had a chance if the plan is actually implemented by the MLS. Reportedly, Beckham had to pay about 25 million U.S. dollars (about USD 243 billion) to own shares of a club based outside the city of New York.
"At some point, she will take that option (buying stocks MLS clubs) and we can process it to ensure suitability for Beckham and Major League Soccer. However, at this time we do not go there," said Courtemanche.
