Quebec nursing homes burned, 24 people killed

Canadian authorities confirmed death toll from updating fire at a nursing home in the small town of L'Isle-Verte, Quebec, earlier this month to 24.

Eight others are still unaccounted for, police said. Many remnants of the charred bodies were analyzed in the hope of identifying more victims.

Meanwhile, missa for the victims was held at a local church on Saturday, attended by the Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper.

The fire in the 52 unit residence in a small town 450 kilometers (280 miles) northeast of Montreal was beginning to break just after after midnight on January 23.

Within about an hour, the walls of the three-story wooden building completely engulfed in flames, fanned the cold winds of up to 70 kilometers (43 miles) per hour.

Recovery efforts have been hampered by the extreme cold, which turned water used to fight fire place covered with thick ice covering it.
