Thailand Threatened Loss of One Million Travelers

The deeper political turmoil in Thailand , along with the political deadlock that may not be resolved soon , will certainly affect the number of foreign tourists , because it's a million foreign tourists visit could be lost if the protest extends until mid-2014 .

The opinion was expressed leading economic think tank .

Kasikorn Research Centre ( KResearch ) said the tourism industry this year and still have a bright future as the business can grow if political turmoil to an end .

KResearch said 29 million foreign tourists are expected to visit the country this year , up 8.5 percent from the previous year and could generate revenue of more than 1.4 trillion bath , because the European economy improves and China have loosened the rules and regulations on the tourism business .

ASEAN Economic Community ( AEC ) is planned to be set in 2015 and the new low cost airline has facilitated tourists visiting Thailand , said KResearch .

However , the ongoing political crisis that led to calls of Emergency Decree on January 22 could suppress the growth of the tourism industry .

KResearch said that if protests prolonged until the first quarter , the number of foreign tourists will be reduced by 500,000 to 28.5 million visitors , generating 1.38 trillion bath , 20 billion baht lower than targeted .

If the demonstration dragged up to mid-2014 , Thailand could lose one million tourists , down to 28 million , and revenue from tourism businesses will be 1.35 trillion baht, or a loss of 50 billion baht last year .

KResearch has urged all parties - public and private , as well as the media and the general public - for serious and sincere work together to find a solution out of the political turmoil .
