Iraq's army and militants fighting in Ramadi

The militant group Islamic State or ISIS has been waging a massive offensive againstRamadi, Iraq, stormed the city with mortar and car bomb attacks directed at Iraq's forces.


Local officials said the attack was apparently aimed at taking over the control of theprovincial capital, one of the last areas in the province of Anbar which is still under the control of the Government of Iraq.

Militants reportedly fired at ISIS government buildings in Ramadi. So far there has been no estimate of the number of victims.

Iraq troops and Kurdish Peshmerga fighters, has been fighting, militants of the militant groups that seized the ISIS territories in Northern and Western Iraq earlier this year.

Overall Iraq has experienced a surge of violence in 2014. Data from the UN Mission inIraq shows more than 13,000 civilians and security forces killed in Iraq until the end ofOctober this year – rose 75 percent from the same period in 2013. (VOA)
