Researchers Ireland Discover New Bird Species in Sulawesi

Suara.com - A group of zoologists from college Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland find new bird species in Wakatobi, Southeast Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. They named the new species as bird chili Wakatobi with the Latin name Diacaeum kuehni.

Genetically, the bird chili wakatobi different and larger than its closest relatives, bird chili gray flanks. The experts also ensure that the species is not the result of heredity or gray flanks Chili interbreeding with other species.

The discovery was published in the journal PLoS ONE. According to Sean Kelly, a doctoral student at Trinity that the team leader said, species identification is critical. Because the area is fairly rapid development can wipe out a species that has not been documented.

"Because people do change the natural environment in Sulawesi very quickly, the discovery and description of the species in the region is very important," said Kelly.

Place discovery, Wakatobi archipelago is a group of islands known as the world's coral triangle. Wakatobi has also long been known to zoologists world as a place that is rich in biodiversity. A legendary researcher Alfred Russel Wallace had done research on it.

Meanwhile, according to Dr Nicola Marples, professor of zoology at Trinity asserts that the discovery was not the end result of the study. Which must be considered further is the preservation of Wakatobi of environmental threats. Because, despite being in the Wakatobi Marine National Park, there is no protection on the islands.
