Stop smoking improve mental health
The results of a recent study shows , quitting smoking can be good for mental health as well as physical health , according to health.com .
The researchers analyzed data from 4,800 smokers in the U.S. which follows two separate surveys held in the next three years .
Those who are addicted or have mental health problems in the first survey less face similar problems in the second survey if they quit smoking , the researchers said .
The first survey found the fact that 40 percent of survey participants had a mood disorder or anxiety or a history of these two conditions , 50 percent deal with alcohol and drug problems 24 percent .
The second survey showed that 29 percent of those who quit smoking experience a mood disorder , while those who still smoke that complain about it as much as 42 percent .
Alcohol problems were reported by 18 percent who quit smoking and 28 percent were still smoking , drug problems experienced while 5 percent of people who quit smoking and 16 percent were still smoking .
When giving treatment to people with mental health disorders , the doctor will examine the patient's smoking habits in the belief that this is the best way to deal with psychiatric problems , said the researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. . Louis.
" The first clinical experts tend to give treatment to people with depression , drug dependency or drug problems by allowing patients to heal themselves if need be , " said lead researcher Patricia Cavazos - Rehg , assistant professor of psychiatry . " Assumption is a psychiatric problem more challenging to overcome and that smoking cessation treatment could reduces future . "
However, both studies did not show a strong association between smoking cessation with increased mental health , and does not prove there is a causal relationship between the two.
" We really need to inform and encourage physicians and patients to cope with this problem , " said Cavazos - Rehg . " When a patient is ready to focus on other mental health problems , then this might be the ideal time to quit smoking . "
