USS Pinckney is conducting training and maritime security operations in international waters in the South China Sea . The ship was carrying two helicopters equipped with search and rescue equipment . The ship was expected to reach the search area within 24 hours .

The U.S. Navy also claimed the U.S. military will deploy Orion aircraft based in Okinawa , Japan . The plane will carry long-range search capability , radar and communications for the search mission .
