Putin defended Russian interests in Ukraine , Canada threatens boycott G8

Russian President Vladimir Putin told U.S. President Barack Obama by telephone that Moscow reserves the right to protect its interests and Russian -speaking people in Ukraine .

In a statement uploaded online , the Kremlin said Obama had expressed concern about the possibility of Russia's military intervention in Ukraine .
