United States and Western allies nearby, Germany , has called for Russia withdraw its military forces from the peninsula of Ukraine , Crimea .
It is delivered in telephone contact between U.S. President Barack Obama , German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday night , about Ukraine , the White House said in a formal statement .
Obama welcomed the conclusions of the European Council of March 6 and unified stance the United States and the European Union on Ukraine . "
" The leaders agreed on the need for Russia withdraw its forces , allowing for the deployment of international observers and human rights monitors to the Crimea , and the support of the presidential election free and fair in May , " the statement said .
The statement noted , Obama and Merkel also discussed the need for rapid Russia agreed on the formation of a contact group that will lead to a direct dialogue between Ukraine and Russia to defuse the situation and restore the territorial integrity of Ukraine .
