Thousands of people flee from Africa to Ship to Italy


Italian Navy has intercepted 1,400 refugees voyage across the Mediterranean from North Africa.

Italian Navy in the last 24 hours has been intercepted at least 1,400 refugees voyage across the Mediterranean from North Africa. The refugees want to seek asylum in Europe, and the number continues to grow.

This year, the Italian Navy has rescued 60 thousand migrants - far more than 42 thousand were saved throughout the year 2013.

The ships that come largely from Tripoli, Libya, but the refugees coming from places like the North African conflict in Eritrea - where the United Nations is investigating human rights abuses - and the conflict in the Middle East such as Syria.

Italy estimates that by the end of the year the number of refugees who reached the coast of North Africa they will amount to more than 100,000 people. VOA
