35 Killed in New Year Celebration in Shanghai

Accidents due to overcrowding in the New Year's Eve celebrations in Shanghai, killing at least 35 people and wounding dozens more.

Visitors crowded on New Year's Eve celebrations in Cheng Yi Square, the Bund area, in downtown Shanghai. (31/12).

The witnesses said the tragedy had occurred after a crowd rushed scramble counterfeit money being thrown someone out of a window on the third floor of a building.

The incident occurred while before midnight local time in the Field Cheng Yi in the Bund, in downtown Shanghai. Witness Cui Tingting (27 years) said fast currents arise to take the bills, which later turned out to be false.


The images contained in social media shows how the pedestrians trying to wake people injured lying on the ground strewn with litter. The official Xinhua news agency said many of the dead were students and children. At least 43 people were injured. (VOA)
