Myanmar's Parliament Rejected A Constitutional Amendment Is Important

Myanmar's Parliament Wednesday (18/11) rejected a constitutional change that banned opposition leader Aung San Su Kyi ran to be President.

Chairman of Myanmar's Parliament says the Constitution drafted the military banopposition leader Aung San Su Kyi became the President, could not be changedbefore the elections next November.

Speaking to reporters in the capital, Pyinmana, Shwe Mann Tuesday, saying voterscould participate in a national referendum on constitutional changes in May. He said itis unlikely any changes could occur soon.

He did not explain why the change had to wait until the new Parliament is sworn in.

Aung Kyi Nyunt, a member of Parliament from the National League for DemocracyParty (NLD) led by Aung San Suu Kyi told VOA delayed the change was a mistake.

Aung San Suu Kyi banned from becoming President by article of the Constitution thatprohibits anyone who has a husband or wife, or children of foreign nationalitybecoming President. (VOA)
