Around 1,000 poultry consisting of chickens and ducks in South Sumatra died suddenly in the last two weeks. These birds are commonly seen in hospital within a day and die with mucus in half and turn blue around the eyes.

Chairman of the Association of Breeders Society of South Sumatra (Sumatra) Ismaidi said the sudden death of birds were recorded at eight locations, including Palembang, Ogan Ilir, Banyuasin, Prabumulih, and Banyuasin. So far, the disease has not been known to the birds.

"The indications are similar bird flu AI, but need to check to be sure," he said in Palembang, South Sumatra, on Thursday (10/01/2013).

One of the many locations of sudden death in poultry is Full Jaya village, Ogan Ilir. Since the last two weeks, about 500 poultry died suddenly in the village.
