Myanmar parliamentary committee decided to maintain the constitutional clause that prevented Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi became president.
The provision is deter anyone who is married or has a child with foreign nationals outside of Myanmar.
Suu Kyi's British husband and they have two sons who are also British. Suu Kyi's husband had died.
Parliamentary committee which is composed of many opponents of Suu Kyi expected to take a vote to block the process of becoming president.
Proposal to reject and replace the law was not approved by 26 of the total 31 members of the panel.
Experts said the clause was created on the basis of the constitution of 2008 which is based on military principles and leads to get rid of Suu Kyi, who became a global icon.
"Only five of the 31 participants of the committee is willing to replace part of the rules that make it difficult position Suu Kyi," said one committee participants who do not want to be named.
"We can not ensure Daw Aung San Suu Kyi lost the chance to be president for the union parliament has yet to approve this decision," said party spokesman Nyan Win.
