Liberia wear special serum for Ebola patients
Liberia began to treat a number of Ebola patients with
special serum made from the blood of patients with Ebola that has been
recovered.
If someone manages to fight infection in the body, it
means that they are able to fight the virus and there are a number of antibodies
in the blood that is able to attack the Ebola virus.
The doctor took a blood sample and convert them into a
raised serum with red blood cells but keep some important antibodies that can
be used to treat other patients.
A number of Ebola patients treated in the United Kingdom
and the United States have got this type of treatment.
The doctors in Liberia will monitor how safe and
effective treatment serum given Elwa Hospital in Monrovia, capital of Liberia.
A number of Liberian health workers have been trained to
provide this therapy.
They hope the experimental treatment can help fight the
virus that has killed thousands of people in West Africa.
Dr. David Hoover, director of the program, said,
"This will create a number of local health care system more independent
and patients will be well served during the epidemic and in the future."
The US, Britain and Canada are testing various types of
vaccines in clinical trials.
The goal is to get 20,000 doses that can be used in West
Africa early next year.
Until last December 13, there were more than 18,000 cases
of Ebola and as many as 6,841 people reported to have died from the disease. (BBC)
