Planet " livable " in the Milky Way
The astronomers estimate how many of the 100 billion stars in our galaxy that have the potential for habitable planets .
Using data from NASA's Kepler telescope , they found one of the five stars have in common with the sun have planets the size of Earth .

" This means , when you see thousands of stars in the night sky , the Sun -like star that has a potentially habitable planet may be just 12 light-years away and can be seen with the naked eye , " said one researcher Erik Petigura , from the University of California , Berkeley .
He added : " It's amazing . "
Unclear whether there is life on planets like the Earth .
His colleague , Andrew Howard , said the findings showed that planets like Earth are the kind that are common in the Milky Way .

However , researchers said that although some members of Earth-sized planet found in the habitable zone , there is no guarantee that the planet could support life .
" Some may have a very thin atmosphere so that the surface will have a hot temperature . Such DNA molecules will not survive , " said investigator Geoff Marcy , professor of astronomy at Berkeley .
Marcy added : " However , some may have the right to hold surface water suitable for the organism . "
Launched in 2009, the Kepler telescope has a mission to search for Earth-like planets that orbit has a certain distance to the Sun .
Kepler - Klikyang recently retired - work by detecting the periodic variations in the brightness of the star . In January 2013 , astronomers using the Kepler data estimates that there are at least Klik17 billion Earth-sized planets in the Milky Way .
