Indonesian Government Targets the Next Three Years of Food
Self-Sufficiency
TRIBUNNEWS.COM, JAKARTA - In the next two to three years,
Indonesia should be self-sufficient in rice, sugar, corn and soybeans, said
Vice President Jusuf Kalla. Attainment of self-sufficiency will have an impact
on economic growth.
"It can maintain, improve well-being, reduce
poverty. Both maintain price stability, and also keep inflation to be too
high," said Jusuf Kalla at the Vice President, Central Jakarta, Monday
(12/15/2014).
The government needs to provide four things to realize
self-sufficiency within the next two years, namely seeds, fertilizers good, affordable,
appropriate planting time and improvement of irrigation facilities.
Minister of Agriculture Amran Sulaiman on the same
occasion said that the government expects rice production by 73 million tons in
2015. In addition, the government is targeting production of 20 million tons of
corn in 2016, and the 2017 soybean self-sufficiency.
In order to realize a good harvest, the government
appointed PT Sang Hyang Seri and PT Fertilizer Indonesia to provide good
quality seeds to farmers' needs.
The government also plans to improve three million
hectares of irrigation tertiary damaged. Annual plan, the government will fix a
million acres, so that in three years all tertiary irrigation can be fixed.
