Information obtained from the Meteorology and Geophysics through Twitter account @ infoBMKG said the epicenter was at 77 km southwest of Aceh Jaya district with a depth of 65 km.

Until this news was revealed, there is no information about building damage or casualties from the earthquake.

Previously, the Simeulue Regency, Aceh Province was hit by an earthquake with a strength of 5.8 on the Richter scale on Thursday at 4:04 pm.

Head of Information Services and Data BMKG Region I Field, Hendra Suwarta in Medan on Thursday told Reuters said the quake was centered at 0.58 degrees north latitude and 92.05 degrees longitude timut.

While the location of the quake was located at 503 km southwest of Simeulue with a depth of 10 km below sea level. BMKG Region I Field predict an earthquake measuring 5.8 magnitude does not pose a potential tsunami.




Hundreds of residents in the city of Calang, Aceh Jaya district, reportedly panicked and ran from their homes each headed toward the hills.

Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Aceh Jaya, Armen Sayuna, said when the quake struck, people were shocked and immediately leave their homes near the coast. "By using the vehicle, they immediately headed toward the hills, the direction of Mount Carak and Mount Ketapang, while others gathered on the highway leading to the hills," said Armen.

Nevertheless, added Armen, earthquake, returned gradually calm atmosphere and some residents have returned to their homes.

Hendri Gunawan, a resident of Calang, said the atmosphere in the city is back to normal Calang. "However, residents remain alert in case of aftershocks," he said, when contacted Kompas.com on Thursday night (1/10/2013).
