U.S. Secretary of State meets Abbas in new Middle East peace mission

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry Thursday arrived in Ramallah to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas , in another effort to promote Israeli-Palestinian peace talks elusive .

Kerry arrived at the presidential office in Ramallah at 17:15 GMT , a little late , due to extreme weather - including snow storms - which swept Israel and the Palestinian Territories , an AFP correspondent said .

The meeting ended at 19:35 GMT , said a State Department official , without giving further details .

On Friday , the top U.S. diplomat was scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres before going on a visit to Jordan .

It is the ninth trip to the U.S. Secretary of Israel and the West Bank since March , and both of them in less than a week .

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said earlier this week that the U.S. goal is " focused on the final agreement " as an agreement between Israel - Palestine .

Last week , he said " we are closer than we have done in many years " to reach a peace deal .

But Palestinians say Kerry notion of security arrangements in the future , which is presented to the Palestinian leadership last week , has sparked a " real crisis . "

Kerry from December 11 to 18 do the tour that will also take him to Vietnam , where he fought as a naval lieutenant in Vietnam and the Philippines .
