Uruguay Senate legalized marijuana consumption

Uruguay became the first country in the world to legalize their citizens to grow , sell and consume marijuana .
After nearly 12 hours of debate , the Senate finally gave approval to the historic bill that legalized marijuana is government sponsored .


This legislation will allow Uruguayan citizens over the age of 18 years to purchase up to 40 grams of marijuana in a month .

This law applies new possibilities in April next year .
The government hopes these measures will help tackle drug cartels , but critics say it would encourage people to sell material that is often associated with this addiction .

Dozens of supporters of the bill proposed by President Jose Mujica was gathered outside the Congress in Montevideo to follow the course of voting .

' Guinea pig '
A senator , Roberto Conde , said it was a response from the fact that it is inevitable , given that Click " war " on drugs has failed .

" We , as a nation , have a duty to provide a specific answer to the public , " Conde said , adding that the Uruguay border used by the cartels to smuggle drugs into neighboring countries .

While senators from the opposition , Alfredo Solari , said Uruguay did not have to do a " trial " against his people .

" This project envision social engineering experiment and did not respect the ethics of experimenting on humans , and this is important in the case of substances such as marijuana , which causes damage to humans , " said Senator Solari told Reuters news agency .

This project has been approved by the lower house of Uruguay in July .
