Chinese authorities use a general meeting in the strife-torn Xinjiang region to punish 55 people on charges that include terrorism .
The official Xinhua news agency said 7,000 local residents and officials witnessed the mass sentencing at a stadium in the Yili region in northern Xinjiang , on Tuesday ( 27/5 ) .
At least three people were sentenced to death . Others were imprisoned for murder , separatism , and organizing or participating in terrorist groups .
At the event , the police announced that 65 people had been arrested on similar charges .
Vice Chairman of the Communist Party of Yili , Li Minghui , said the rally showed " determination " to crack down on what it called China's three crimes , namely terrorism , separatism and extremism .
Beijing has announced a year-long security crackdown in the aftermath of the attacks last week that killed 43 people and injured more than 90 people in Urumqi , the regional capital . VOA
