Ukrainian troops clash with separatists in Luhansk . increased violence in the eastern part

Separatist pro - Russian and Ukrainian government forces on Wednesday ( 28/5 ) fought in the Luhansk region , while the increase in violence in the eastern part of the country.

Interior Ministry of Ukraine reported clashes broke out after separatist militants tried to storm the National Guard units in the Ukrainian city of Luhansk . The ministry said there were casualties on both sides but did not mention the estimated amount.

On Monday , clashes between separatists and government forces near the airport of Ukraine in Donetsk killed about 50 people - mostly insurgents were killed in an air strike . Fighting continues in and around the airport on Tuesday .

Ukrainian miners supporting separatists rallied Wednesday in the city of Donetsk . Hundreds of miners took to the streets carrying Russian flags and banners demanding the formation of separate independent state of Ukraine . But the town was not hit by violence that broke earlier in the week .

Also on Wednesday , an official said Russian President Vladimir Putin Putin will go to Paris next week to celebrate the 70th anniversary since the D - Day or the landing of allied troops in Normandy during World War II . Putin will hold an informal meeting with French President Francois Hollande on a number of issues , including Ukraine .

Newly elected president of Ukraine , Petro Poroshenko who also will attend the D-Day celebrations in France , told the Bild newspaper in Germany he would try to meet with Putin . After winning the election on Sunday , beating Poroshenko promised armed separatists in the country militarily . VOA
