When the silent streets and the shooting had stopped after clashes between demonstrators and the army in June 1989 , the Chinese government began arresting people suspected criminals . A lot of people have been arrested and released , but 1,600 people received prison sentences formal .
Now , the person who allegedly lived in that era and was sentenced to remain behind bars .
BBC in China , Celia Hatton , said he could not find a picture of the prisoner but he knows his name : Miao Deshun .
Deshun was a factory worker from Beijing , he was accused on charges of intentionally burning by throwing a basket towards a burning tank .
Of these offenses, he was sentenced to death , later commuted to life.
Miao will not be released until 15 September 2018 .
" He was a quiet man . He is often depressed , " recalled Dong Shengkun , a former Tiananmen prisoner who had shared a prison cell with Miao Deshun .
All interviewees mention the BBC and Miao know he is very skinny , almost a skeleton .
" I was chained but he did not . Warden says he may think he is too skinny to be chained . , Who will not be able to walk with the weight of the chain , " said Dong .
Life or death ?
Beijing Bureau of Corrections refused to answer questions about the Miao Deshun and say they never serve questions from foreign journalists .
However Dui Hua , a U.S. based organization that advocates for prisoners' rights said the possibility Miao China is the sole custody of the Tiananmen events .
Of course Miao Deshun may have died in prison a long time and the news about it yet surfaced .
Bureau of Corrections would only confirm the status of prisoners to the family .
But assume Miao Deshun still alive , why he stayed in jail long after many others were released ?
According traces of other prisoners , Miao refused to sign the letter contains a statement of regret for involvement in the Tiananmen protests .
He also refused to work and chose to spend his time with reading the newspaper in the cell .
