The clash in the southern Philippines , two killed

Two people were killed when government troops clashed with Philippine left-wing guerrillas in the southern part of the country at the weekend , the military said on Sunday .

A soldier and a suspected New People's Army ( NPA ) were killed after a 25 - minute clash in the village of Alipao , Small Town Alegria , Surigao del Norte , Mindanao province , at around 12:20 local time on Saturday ( 23/11 ) , said Alberto Caber , Military spokesman of the Eastern Mindanao Command .

Caber told Xinhua in a text message that the Philippine Army soldiers are conducting a security patrol , when they met with a number of NPA rebels led by a man with the nickname Oto in Front 16 . Fierce firefight was unavoidable .

" Two homemade explosives seized from unexploded NPA members who were killed , " said Caber . He added that the security operation in the area continued.

Lt. Gen. Ricardo Rainier Cruz III , commander of the Eastern Mindanao Command , warned military commanders in the field to be vigilant when doing joint operations with the Philippine National Police , since the NPA - the leftists - has stepped up its activities against military personnel and civilians in the region .

The NPA , the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines with 4,000 personnel , waged a guerrilla war in 60 Philippine provinces since 1969 .
