Unicef : 2.2 billion children need greater assistance
Unicef : 2.2 billion children need greater assistance
The UN Children's Fund ( UNICEF ) , Thursday ( 30/1 ) , called for more efforts to identify and bridge the gaps that hinder 2.2 billion children are the most disadvantaged in the world to enjoy their rights .
UNICEF issued the call in a report released at the UN Headquarters , New York , and highlights the importance of data in direct funding and action to reach those who most need help .
" Data can be collected in order to save and improve the lives of millions of children , especially the most vulnerable , " said Tessa Wardlaw , a leader Data and Analysis Section of UNICEF , at the launch of the new UN agency report " The State of the Worlds Children 2014 In Numbers : Every Child Counts - Revealing Disparities , Advancing Childrens Rights " .
" Further progress can only be achieved if we know which are the most neglected children , where boys and girls are not in school , a place where a disease outbreak or a shortage of basic hygiene , " she said to the official, as quoted by Xinhua on Friday morning .
Enormous progress has been made since the Convention on the Rights of the Child ( CRC ) was signed in 1989 and in the process leading to the peak of the Millennium Development Goals by 2015 , the UNICEF report said .
Among other examples of the progress achieved , the report shows that due to improvements in water supply and sanitation , as many as 90 million children have been saved , but if not , they already had died before they reached the age of five years if the level in 1990 persisted .
In addition , improved nutrition has resulted in a 37 percent reduction in mortality since 1990 and primary school enrollment has increased , even in underdeveloped countries . In 1990 , only 53 of the 100 children in the country can go to school but their number has risen to 81 from 100 in 2011 .
But the statistical data in the report shows the child rights violations , including the death of as many as 6.6 million children under five years old in 2012 , mostly due to preventable diseases , as well as violations of their basic rights to live and thrive .
Other data showed that 15 percent of children interfere in the working world , conditions that violate their right to be protected from economic exploitation and their right to learn and play .
