Nigerians seeking asylum in Chad ,
UN High Commissioner for Refugees ( UNHCR ) on Thursday , said no more than 17,000 Nigerians seeking asylum in Chad , Cameroon , and Niger due to the crisis in the north-eastern Nigeria .
Angele Dikongue - Atangana , UNHCR representative in Nigeria , revealed the information during the briefing in Abuja . He said the UNHCR in collaboration with the country to ensure the situation of asylum seekers to ensure their safety .
Dikongue - Atangana added insecurity continues to occupy the top position in the list of challenges for UNHCR while thousands of homeless people continues .
" The world faces the most serious refugee crisis for nearly 20 years , while the conflict continues to force tens and hundreds of thousands of people to leave their homes , " said the UNHCR representative , as quoted by Xinhua .
He said the war remains the dominant cause that makes people leave their homes , while more than half of the world's refugees are from the battle -torn country .
" The humanitarian situation in West Africa have deteriorated due to insecurity , high unemployment and drought , " said Dikongue - Atangana .
