A spokesman for the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali says several soldiers , UN peacekeepers ( MINUSMA ) , were killed when a suicide bomber detonated his car in front of the bank they were guarding in Kidal, northern Mali town , on Saturday ( 14/12 ) .
Exact number of casualties is not yet known and no one has claimed responsibility for the attack .
Several militant groups , including ethnic Tuaregs , take advantage of the confusion of military coup in the capital , Bamako , in March 2012 to retake control in the northern part of the country, where they planned to establish an Islamic state .
The central government regained control of northern Mali after the French -led military operation in January.
Militants are no longer able to launch large military action , but the rest of the group 's fighters launched a small -scale sporadic attacks in the north .
