Indonesia's 2014 Car Sales Projected Fixed
PT Astra International estimates that sales of cars and motorcycles in Indonesia will not change in the next year. Sales figures which tend to be static induced weakening rupiah and high interest rates.
Indonesia's new car sales likely to reach 1.2 million units in 2014. While motorcycle sales between 7.8 million and 8 million units in the same period. The figures were similar to the projection of this year, said Sudirman MR, Astra director and Chairman of the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo), Thursday.
"The weakening of the rupiah could encourage us to raise the price of the vehicle. On the other hand, Bank Indonesia benchmark rate was raised to 7.5%, "he said.
The majority of Indonesian consumers buy a motorcycle and a car through a bank loan system.
Astra controls more than half of Indonesia's market share in the category of two-and four-wheeled vehicles. Astra, which is also struggling in the plantation sector, finance, mining, and heavy machinery, plans to expand its business into the field of infrastructure.
"We currently have a toll road. We hope to operate the segment again next year, "said President Director of Astra, Prijono Sugiarto, in the same press conference with Sudirman.
According Prijono, Astra infrastructure focused on the operation of toll roads, ports and power plants. "[The operation] is still an industrial area we studied," he added. Astra also plans to build a 47-story office tower and three residential buildings on the land area of 2.4 hectares in the center of Jakarta. (WSJ)
