U.S. : violence against protesters Ukraine " unacceptable "


The U.S. on Monday ( 2/12 ) urged the Ukrainian leadership to respect the people's right to free speech and declare violence against demonstrators in Kiev " unacceptable " .

" Violence by government agencies against peaceful demonstrators in Kiev on Saturday morning ( 30/11 ) is unacceptable , " said White House spokesman Jay Carney , Xinhua reported .

Major demonstrations rocked the capital of Ukraine , Kiev , when tens of thousands of people took to the streets over the weekend to protest President Viktor Yanukovych 's decision to freeze trade agreement with the European Union ( EU ) .

Thousands of protesters stormed the presidential administration building and the office of mayor of Kiev , triggering clashes between police and protesters and making 53 protesters injured , said the Government Department of Health Perawaran Kiev .

" We urge the leaders of Ukraine to respect the people's right of freedom of expression and assembly , " Carney said in a daily briefing at the White House , as reported by Xinhua . The spokesman added the United States did not regard it as a demonstration of a coup attempt .

The protests on Sunday reported as the largest since the march began on November 21 , when the Ukrainian abruptly suspended the government announced the signing of the agreement . Kiev had been due to sign the agreement with the EU economic policy in the Eastern Partnership Summit in Lithuania on 28-29 November. But the Ukrainian government malahlebih choose closer trade relations with Russia .

" We continue to support the aspirations of the Ukrainian people to realize a prosperous European democracy . Unification of Europe is the surest path to economic growth and to strengthen democracy in Ukraine , " said Carney .
