The greatest threat of modern medicine
A committee of health experts from around the world warn that the types of drug -resistant bacteria is one of the greatest threats of modern medicine .
Writing in the medical journal The Lancet , experts called for global coordination - which has never been taken so far - to address the threat.
This coordination includes trimming antibiotic prescribing and issuing incentives to pharmaceutical companies to develop new drugs .
Experts warn , without antibiotics , healing from minor surgery to cancer treatment with chemotherapy may not be possible .
In addition , deaths from infections in developed countries may be returned to the level before the beginning of the 20th century .
" Modern drugs have never faced a threat of this magnitude , " the scientists wrote in the journal The Lancet .
They also said that , if no action is taken globally coordinated , health care costs will rise sharply because of having to buy a new, more expensive antibiotics .
Hospital spending will swell because patients must be hospitalized will be higher. ( BBC )
