Batam city is the largest city in Riau Islands and is the city with the third largest population in Sumatra after Medan and Palembang, According to the Department of Population and Civil Registration Per Batam Batam April 2012 the population reached 1,153,860 inhabitants. Metropolitan Batam consists of three islands, namely Batam, Galang Rempang and connected by a bridge Barelang. Batam is a city with a very strategic location. In addition to being on international shipping lanes, the city has a close enough distance to Singapore and Malaysia. Batam is one of the fastest growing cities in Indonesia. When it was built in the early 1970s the town was only inhabited by about 6,000 people and within 40 years the population grew Batam to 158-fold.

Batam island was first inhabited by the Malay people as the strait since the year 231 AD. Island that was once a battleground in the fight against Admiral Hang Nadim was used by the colonial government in the 1960s as a petroleum logistics base in Sambu Island.
In the 1970s, with the initial aim to make Singapore its Batam as Indonesia, according to Presidential Decree number 41 of 1973, Batam Island designated as an industrial area with a work environment supported by the Industrial Development Authority Batam Island or better known as the Batam Authority Board (BOB) as a driver of the development of Batam.
With the rapid development of Batam Island, in the 1980s, based on Government Regulation No. 34 of 1983, Batam districts that are part of the Riau Islands regency, upgraded to Batam municipality that has the task of running the government and social administration and development performed mendudukung Batam Authority.
In the decade of the reform era in the late 1990s, by Act number 53 of 1999, the administrative Batam municipality changed its status into autonomous regions, namely Batam City Government to carry out governance and development functions to include Batam Authority Board.

The town is part of the Riau Islands province, has a land area covering 1,040 km ² or about 1.5 times the area of Singapore, while the total area reaches 2,950 km ². Batam city tropical climate with an average temperature of 26 to 34 degrees celsius. The city has a hilly terrain and berlembah. A soil less fertile red soil.

Batam City community is a heterogeneous society consisting of diverse ethnic and class. Dominant tribe among others, Malay, Javanese, Batak, Minangkabau, and Chinese. With have smth. As an umbrella and uphold Malay Unity in Diversity, Batam be conducive in moving economic activity, socio-political and cultural society. As of April 2012, Batam has inhabited the soul 1.15386 million and has a population growth rate is very high. In the period 2001 to April 2012 rate of population growth has averaged more than 8 percent per year.

Islam is the majority religion in Batam city, the number of adherents as much as 76.69% of the entire population of the city. Followed by Christians (17.02%), Buddhists (5.79%), and Hinduism (0.40%). [3] Mosque Batam is located in the city center, adjacent to the square, the mayor's office and the office Parliament became a symbol of the religious people of Batam. Christianity and Catholicism are also widely embraced by people of Batam, especially those from ethnic Batak and Flores. Buddhism is mostly held by Chinese citizens. Batam has a Vihara is supposedly the largest in Southeast Asia, namely Vihara Duta Maitreya.

Indonesian is used as the language of instruction daily. Local languages are also used by people from other areas, such as language Minang, Batak, and Javanese language and various dialects of Chinese ethnicity. It so happens because of Batam is where various tribes met.

Access to the city of Batam can be reached by air and sea. Batam Island
is an island in the Riau Islands province, where there is the city of Batam. This island is the island closest to the country of Singapore, separated by 15 km wide strait, and a free trade zone (FTZ = Free Trade Zone), part of Sijori region (Singapore, Johor (Malaysia), and Riau Islands (Indonesia)). Through five terimal ferry in Batam island, we can travel to Singapore and Johor (one of the countries that make up Malaysia) through Sekupang Ports, Port of Batam Centre, Nongsa Ports and Harbour Bay Harbor, and to the islands around islands Riau from Telaga Harbour and Port Sekupang Punggur.
