Canada sent fighter jets CF 18 to eastern Europe
Canada deployed six CF-18 fighter jets to eastern Europe as part of NATO's response to the worsening crisis in Ukraine, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Thursday.
Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that Ukraine is on the verge of civil war, triggering fears of a direct Russian intervention.
Increased NATO air strikes and the addition of naval ships in the area was done when the Ukrainian troops and pro-Russian forces had faced each other.
Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - which is the border with Russia and has a fairly large population of ethnic Russians - has had all the guarantees necessary, as well as Ukraine neighboring Poland and Romania.
Harper condemned what he called "illegal occupation of Ukraine and Russia over military provocation ongoing aggressive."
Canadian leader said he worried about "Russian expansionism under the leadership of Mr. Putin."
"I believe this to be a serious long-term threat to global peace and security, and we are always ready to work with our allies in NATO and elsewhere to try and bring stability whatever we can to aspire situation."
The United States also has sent fighters to the Baltic states and Poland, to increase the confidence of eleven member countries ruled by Moscow, AFP reported.
