Secretary-General: starvation threatens people of South Sudan
United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, on Wednesday, warned that more than one million people in southern Sudan are at risk of starvation.
"Without urgent action, up to one million people are facing starvation in a matter of months," said Ban welcomed the assistance of Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva, Eu.
"Millions will starve today-and we see evidence of very high malnutrition among hundreds of thousands of people displaced by the conflict, especially women and children," he stressed, as reported to AFP.
Ban also called for an end to the fighting and a political resolution to the conflict.
"We need the resources to continue to provide assistance and livelihood support," he said.
The conflict in southern Sudan has killed thousands of people and forced about one million others displaced since fighting broke out on December 15 in the capital Juba, before spreading to other States in the oil-rich country.
