Syria Ready Counsel with the Opposition in Russia
The Syrian government says it is ready to meet the
opposition in talks in Moscow to end the civil war that has lasted nearly four
years there.
Syrian Foreign Ministry on Saturday (27/12) says it is
ready to participate in "early and consultative meeting" in order to
find a solution to the conflict.
But there are still many obstacles. ISIS militants who
controlled a third of Syrian territory is not involved in any process to end
the conflict. Many other opposition groups do not have a unified response on
the meeting with the government.
Russia's Foreign Ministry said the meeting was expected
to take place in late January and are "informal."
Various efforts this year to find a diplomatic solution,
including two rounds of UN-brokered talks, no substantial progress.
The conflict in Syria started on a peaceful demonstration
against the rule of President Bashar al-Assad in March 2011, but it quickly
turned into a civil war that has killed some 200,000 people.
This month the UN says Syria 12.2 million people are now
displaced both inside and outside the country and the need of humanitarian
assistance.
