Iraqi military has begun a major operation to dislodge fighters × group Islamic State of Tikrit, northern Iraq.
Officials said the attack begins × Tuesday morning (19/8) to retake the city, which is the hometown of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
The news comes a day after the American military helped × × Iraqi and Kurdish forces retake an important dam in northern Iraq from Sunni extremists.
President Barack Obama said if militants succeeded in damaging the Mosul Dam, the action would lead to "catastrophic" floods in northern Iraq ×, and will kill thousands of people.
In a brief statement the White House, Obama said that Americans × saw important advances taking place in Iraq, America helped beat back the terrorists and provide weapons and support to the troops and the Iraqi Kurdish ×.
He said the United States will continue to support × unity government emerging × Iraq and will also build an international coalition to bring humanitarian aid to Iraq. VOA
