Indonesian search and rescue team on Friday morning managed to find 17 more bodies of victims of accidents boat carrying villagers who want to celebrate Eid. This amount raised the death toll to 34 people.
The ship was carrying 58 passengers overturned and sank Thursday in the River Barombang, North Sumatra. As of Friday afternoon rescuers have found 34 bodies, including six children aged between 7 months to 11 years. Twenty-four other passengers were rescued. The other three, which are not listed on the passenger manifest, is still missing.
This is the second ship accident this week related to the celebration of Eid, after a ferry boat carrying more than 70 passengers drowned in the River Kapuas, Central Kalimantan. Seventeen people were killed and 53 others were rescued.
Millions of Muslims forth the end of the month of Ramadan to stay in touch with their families back home. This homecoming phenomenon often cause traffic congestion on land, sea and air. Accidents often occur mainly due to poor safety standards.
