Internet access "is a human right"
Internet access is considered essential to freedom of
opinion and economic growth
Affordable Internet access should be a human right,
because it represents political freedom and economic prosperity for many people
in the world, according to a survey on Monday (24/11).
Most people also do not want a nation or any organization
to manage global computer network, to prevent the eradication of freedom of
speech and political expression.
But they split on who should manage it.
Survey conducted CIGI-Ipsos to 23,000 people in 24
countries, including Indonesia, was revealed in internet management committee
meeting in Ottawa, Canada.
It is estimated, one-third the world's population (2.3
billion people) are connected online.
"Outstanding public support to the idea that
internet access should be a human right shows how important the internet to
freedom of opinion, freedom groups, social communication and new knowledge as
well as economic opportunity and growth," said Fen Hampson of the
commission. (BBC)
